I just came off a 4400mi road trip in my '87. Had only one problem:
alternator bearings lock-up early one morning. Luckily I was within a
mile of a town. It had an Advanced parts store and had a new piece.
The new alternator cost $115 and they directed me to a shop that would
R/R it for me. I had no wrenches, so I couldn't do it myself. It was a
small shop in Ky and they did it for me right then. When it was ready,
I had my travellers checks ready, since I figured I would get screwed.
The guy wrote up the bill and asked: 'You think $20 is OK?'. There are
honest folks in Ky!
That alternator was the original piece and lasted 88K miles.
One ongoing problem I have with the engine is; it leaks oil. Does
anyone have any experience with the 'high-mileage' oils that claim it
can seal oil leaks? I've never been able to solve the oil-leak problem
and I'm wondering if this type oil would actually work for the leak?
